Books in Medieval Times

Pupils of grade 5a in Szkoła Podstawowa nr 11 in Przemyśl and their Polish teacher Ms Katarzyna Skotnicka studied about the history of books in Medieval Times and made a film about it. Before the invention of printing machines books were handmade and treasured as works of art and  symbols of knowledge. They were written by monks and the monasteries had the first libraries. The handwriting was very neat and painstaking so the book creation required hard work and patience.

Medieval weapons

Talking about the Middle ages the pupils from 3a  learned that medieval Bulgarian army consists of cavalry and infantry, and in the 9-10th century it was one of the largest military forces in Europe. Bulgarian army was well equipped: the soldier has a sword ,a  long spear and a bow with arrows .  There is a round shield, a mace and a lasso on the saddle . On his belt he has a flint and a  knife. The Cavalry is equipped with metal armors and helmets. The horses also have armor. The armor is of two types - woven armor and forged armor. Bulgarians used siege engines, catapults, siege towers, machines for breaking pinnacles on the walls.  The  shields are wooden, round in shape or tapered at the bottom. In the church of Trapezitsa there is an image of a shield with a lion and the pupils tried to make a copy ... Our ancestors, the Slavs, used  "large and long shields like doors." Perhaps they were rectangular.
The  sword and the saber are considered as a symbol of the Middle Ages. They are weapons for inflicting hit the enemy in close combat, often in single combat.
See our shields! Aren’t they just as real?

Lesson for the middle ages

The third-grade students studied about the creation of the Bulgarian state. They learned that in 632  the Bulgars, originally from Central Asia, formed an independent state that became known as Great Bulgaria under the leadership of Khan Kubrat. Pressure from the Khazars led to the subjugation of Great Bulgaria in the second half of the 7th century. One of the Kubrat’s successors, Khan Asparukh, migrated with some of the Bulgar tribes to the area, around the Danube delta, and subsequently conquered Scythia Minor and Moesia Superior from the Byzantine Empire, expanding his new kingdom further into the Balkan Peninsula. A peace treaty with Byzantium in 681 and the establishment of a permanent Bulgarian capital at Pliska south of the Danube mark the beginning of the First Bulgarian Empire.
The children drew a colorful historical filmstrip.
